Nearly 100% of my African-American friends in both the film business as well as the academy found it unbearably insulting and retro. I did not see it


I started reading the book before the movie came out, and couldn't get through it - the dialog seemed fake and it was difficult to "get into" the story -- I find writing that poorly mimics a particular vernacular quite distracting. Your take on the movie confirms what I figured would be the case....

I couldn't agree with you an ounce more. I haven't even watched it yet. But after a series of Madea's and Precious, For colored girls.. And though this next one was GREAT and won an Oscar, The Blind Side.. I just feel like I've heard those stories before.
