God, I loved "Mean Streets" when it first came out. What a revelation the young De Niro and Scorsese were. I grew up going to the San Genaro festival, so that shot of the festival overhead and the voice over saying something like, " I hate that fucking feast" was just hysterically funny. I can still remember the Italian nougat candy that was so hard they literally had to cut off a piece with an ax. It was a toothsome experience, to be sure.

I love the vibe of this blog. Often enlightening, always interesting, occasionally heartwarming, crazy good writing, with a hipness and a coolness that can only come from someone who is a little bit nerdish at heart.

Will you take this as a compliment? Because that is how I meant it.

I sometimes call my boys "Mookie" or "Mook." I think I first heard it as the name of the Spike Lee character in "Do the Right Thing." I thought it meant "cutie," but it's hilarious that it also means mooseknuckle!

Oh man, how could you not have put down "Amelie"? I watch that over and over again for her hair...her clothes...and just the basic richness of the movie. The premise sure sounds interesting...most movies today are about a load of nonsense...
