We lived in a building that looks similar to the one in the top photo. I remember the paper-thin walls and how self-conscious they made me feel during my parents' battles.

I returned to Amsterdam with my kids last summer. It was wonderful to take them to my favorite candy shop, Jamin, to ride the "rondvaartboot" in the canals, and to visit the Rembrandts, Vermeers, and Van Goghs. What a great city!

Wow Billy, what a story about about what you saw at the train station. It reminded me of something that happened when I was a lot younger. I was with my boyfriend in this case and we saw a teenager grabbing a lady's bag and running away, then he got in a bicycle with a friend and run as fast as they could. My bf and I decided to follow them in our own bicycle, they never realized that we we're doing it. At some point we lost the guys but found a policeman in a motorcycle so we gave him the information and he went to try to find the guys.
I always wondered if the policeman ever found the teenagers and I always waited for a police officer to knock my home door one day to ask questions but it never happened.

What a scary and amazing story. How intimidating for anyone, let alone a young man. jan
